CASE STUDY
Time Warner Cable,
Raleigh Division
Headquarters: Morrisville, NC
Line of Business: A provider of
entertainment, information and
broadband-enabled services

CERTIFIED INSTALLER
KEEPS PRICES LOW AND
SAFETY HIGH
When undertaking a field computing
upgrade, Time Warner Cable’s (TWC)
Raleigh Division wanted to ensure
that the installation of new wireless
technology into fleet vehicles would
be handled professionally, quickly
and proficiently. After all,
one loose wire and the
whole system could be
out of communication
for the day—an incident
that a service-led company
like TWC wants to
avoid. Safety standards
were also of paramount
importance.
USAT, a mobility
systems integrator, was
chosen to provide and
install the hardware and
to provision the new
modems. George Geddis,
an IT business analyst
for TWC, says, “We
valued a single-point-ofcontact
for all technology
inside the vehicle—
USAT brings us closer to
that goal.”
The leading manufacturer
of vehicle mounting
systems for technology, Gamber-
Johnson was selected to provide
brackets for the fleet vehicles.
TWC carefully scrutinized the safety
of the mounts and the installation
processes surrounding them. In
order to address the safety concerns
of its clients, Gamber-Johnson has
instituted a certification process that
assures that its mounts are not only
well-designed and manufactured
to quality standards but are also
installed correctly and safely by
trained technicians. Central to the
Certified Installer Program is an
ISO 9001:2000 certified training
process based on the latest industry
criteria that provides a thorough
understanding of new standards.
“Gamber-Johnson’s Certified
Installer Program gives TWC a
degree of confidence in who we
hire to install technology in our fleet
and adds credence to our decision
to select USAT,” says Geddis.
The technology upgrade, which
encompassed the vehicles of over
200 field workers, enables TWC’s
technicians to have access to information
and billing systems without
relying on voice dispatchers. TWC
counts this project as a win. It
was able to make a major upgrade
to infrastructure without exhausting
internal resources. And it was
able to save money by going with
non-hardened laptops—the
special attention that it put into
mounting the computers securely
made this decision feasible.
